Once Human is a free-to-play open-world survival game developed by Starry Studio and published with NetEase Games. It launched on Steam on July 9, 2024, reached mobile in 2025, and arrived on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on August 25, 2026. It blends three genres that rarely share a roof: survival crafting, base building and a looter-shooter with build-defining gear.
Two years in, the game has been reworked many times. The question is simple: is it still a good place to spend your evenings, or has it become too much of everything?
A world that is genuinely strange
The setting is the main reason people stay. An alien substance called Stardust has warped the planet, and the result is part post-apocalypse, part cosmic horror. Buildings float in the sky, giant creatures stroll on the horizon, and towns are full of mutated wildlife and odd cults.
Critics agree on this point. IGN singled out the unusual creature designs, and God is a Geek praised the atmosphere. The tone swings from eerie to silly, which can feel uneven, but it keeps exploration unpredictable. The weak spot is the story: several reviewers, including GamingBolt and Game8, found the plot and writing forgettable next to the visuals.
Survival and base building
Survival is present but forgiving. You track hunger, thirst and a sanity meter that drops in polluted zones. It adds pressure without turning every trip into a chore.
The real depth is your territory. You can pick it up and move it, then fill it with crafting benches, power, water and automated production lines. Captured creatures, called Deviants, can work in your base or fight beside you. Blueprints carry over between servers, so a design you perfect is never truly lost. IGN called the building simple but solid, while GamingBolt felt the blueprint and building systems lacked foundations. Both views are fair: it is easy to start and surprisingly deep once you automate.
Shooting and builds
Combat is third-person shooting with a loot layer. Weapons and armor carry elemental and status effects such as burning, frost, shock and bouncing bullets. Stack the right pieces and your build changes how fights play out. Chasing the last item that completes a set is the game's best hook.
New gear keeps arriving. The October 21 update adds a new rifle and a new vest built around the Frost Vortex mechanic. The weak link is the feel of basic gunplay. Eurogamer said "weak action" holds the game back, and many enemies feel like bullet sponges until your build comes online.

Scenarios, seasons and classes
Once Human is split into scenarios: themed servers with their own map, rules and goals. Most run on a fixed cycle of a few weeks. The new ocean scenario, Isles of Abyss, launches on October 21 as a PvE mode with a core cycle of about 21 days. When a cycle ends, you move on and keep your blueprints and some progress, but not your world.
This is the most divisive design choice. Some players love the regular fresh start. Others hate watching a base they spent weeks on disappear. Permanent servers soften the blow, and in September the developers began merging them because populations had become too thin and scattered. Isles of Abyss gets its permanent server on November 12.
The September 16 class update shows both sides of the studio. It added beast riding for the Beastmaster class, but it also broke beast whistle summoning and briefly cut the summon limit. The team explained the changes and promised fixes across the next three patches. Communication is good. Stability is not always.
Monetization
The game is free, and the store is mostly cosmetic: outfits, weapon skins, base decorations and a seasonal pass. Everyeye.it praised the absence of purchases that speed up progression, and that matches the general player view. You do not need to pay to build a strong PvE character.
The studio has also removed some friction. Since September 28, reshaping your character and changing hair color are free, where both used to cost paid items. The volume of shop events and limited-time draws can still feel heavy, but it rarely touches power.
Performance and technical state
On PC, the bar to entry is reasonable. Steam lists a GTX 750 Ti and 8 GB of RAM as the minimum, and a GTX 1060 with 16 GB as recommended. Storage is the real ask: 100 GB, with an SSD strongly recommended. An internet connection is always required.
The bigger issue is patch quality. The official news feed shows bug-fix notes after nearly every update, from clipping cosmetics to events failing to start on some servers. Fixes come quickly, but new problems tend to arrive with each major update.
Player reception
On Steam, Once Human sits at "Mostly Positive", with about 79% of more than 191,000 reviews positive. That is a big recovery from launch week, when early reviews were mixed. On OpenCritic it holds a 74 Top Critic Average, with PC Gamer and IGN among the more positive voices and Eurogamer and GamingBolt among the cooler ones. Players praise the world, the building and the fair free-to-play model. They criticize the grind, server resets and bugs.
Who it's for
Once Human suits survival and crafting fans who enjoy tinkering with bases and gear, and who like playing with a small group. It is also a strong pick for anyone who wants a big, content-rich game without paying upfront. It is a poor fit if you want tight shooting, a strong story, or a single world that lasts forever.
Verdict
Once Human earns a 7.5/10. It is a weird, rich and generous survival shooter with a world you will remember, satisfying builds and excellent base building. Seasonal resets, too many overlapping systems and a steady flow of bugs keep it from greatness.
Play it if you love survival crafting, base automation and looter-shooter builds, ideally with friends. Skip it if you hate starting over, want polished gunplay, or prefer a simple, focused game.
